June is PRIDE month. And while members of the LGBT community continue to be discriminated against around the world, one cannot help but take hope in the fact that we are on the cusp on a major breakthrough in LGBT relations. From the probable Supreme Court ruling against DOMA to Caitlyn Jenner’s well-received transformation, Americans are more accepting of the LGBT community than ever before.
Pride month didn’t even exist until Bill Clinton declared it so on June 2, 2000. In 2009 President Obama amended it to be Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender month. In 2014, Obama noted “as progress spreads from sate to state, as justice is delivered in the courtroom, and as more or our fellow Americans are treated with dignity and respect – our Nation becomes not only more accepting, but more equal as well.”
At Fantasy Gifts, we are proud to be strong supporters of the LGBT community. However, we were recently asked by a reporter if we have a separate section for LGBT customers. Our answer was no. The reason for this is quite simple. Our products are merchandised by group, not by user. It is not up for us as a retail store to determine who and how each product is used. I cannot think of a single item we carry that would be used exclusively by either a straight person or a gay person.
Sexual acts do not equal sexual identity.
Straight couples are experimenting more with toys for pegging and prostate play. We train our sales staff to be educated about every item we carry in the store and how to use it but not to make any judgments on who uses it on whom. When we notice certain trends among our LGBT community, we try and accommodate them. For example, many lesbians have told us that they prefer we carry dildos without balls. No problem. We have a wide variety of dildos with and without balls to fit any harness. We also now carry a line of harnesses in plus size that can accommodate either a larger woman or man.
While acceptance of the LGBT community is increasing, the fight for equality is not yet over. Until every citizen has the same rights under the Constitution afforded to them in each and every state, and every person has the same equal protection under the law, we will continue to reside in a prejudicial society. Adult stores have been at the forefront of this issue since the 1970’s and we will continue to fight each battle until victory has been achieved. Fantasy Gifts has always been a sex positive outlet and will continue to remain so.
