Fantasy Gifts NJ is starting a Smutty Book Club! Much like our sexy game nights, this ain’t your mom’s book club – although moms and grandmoms are welcome! This is a group for people who enjoy reading and discussing romance and erotic novels. Each month we’ll choose a book to read and discuss online.

This pick of the month for May is . . . A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas. This book and its sequels have topped the New York Times best-seller list since it was published in May of 2015.

We admit it – we’re a little late to the party with this one. But people are still reading and discussing it so we wanted to see what all the fuss is about. Full disclosure, I tried reading this book when it first came out after multiple people recommended it to me. I did not finish it. I am a voracious reader. I read one book a week – sometimes more if there nothing decent to watch. But this book? I only read the first quarter of it and my reaction was meh! Where was the sex? Everyone kept promising that it would get better and that the second book was even better than the first book but the idea of slogging my way through A Court of Thorns and Roses just to get to A Court of Mist and Fury just seemed to be a painful slog I wasn’t up for.

The premise seems simple enough. A young girl kills a wolf in the woods and gets dragged to a magical land where she is held captive by a mythical creature that is also somehow incredibly hot. I admit fantasy is not my usual genre so we’ll see – is A Court of Thorns and Roses like Beauty and the Beast or is it more Twilight? Or does it just stand on its own?

But I’m up for the challenge and this month I will read it and host an online discussion on June 27 at 4:00 p.m. EST. Stay tuned and let us know your thoughts. If you loved it or hated it we want to know. If you loved it tell us why, maybe it’ll help me figure out why it’s been such a hit. If you hate let me know and maybe we can commiserate over it.
