Summer flings can often find themselves having some fun with lots of water involved. Whether it is the pool, the lake, ocean, a hot tub or even the shower, there are some things you need to know before submerging yourself in this wet and wild fantasy.

1. Safety first: Even though you may want to stay safe and use condoms, depending on the type of water you are in could crate issues with condom use. Chemicals in pools or the heat from a hot tub can cause the condom to weaken and break. The same goes for oils in sun screen being used and potentially being transferred onto the condom. Water can also cause the condom to slip off easily. If condom use is a requirement for partner play, you may want to reconsider taking this plunge.
2. Use Lube – and lots of it. Water is NOT a lubricant. In fact, it can wash away a lot of your body’s natural lubricants and can cause more friction during underwater play. You’ll absolutely want to pick up and use (and reapply) often if you find yourself re-enacting the infamous Showgirls pool scene. Silicone lube would be the best because even water-based lube can get washed away or absorbed into your body. Silicone lube will stay much longer and can be after care to help avoid or reduce any potential chub rub.
3. Vagina-Havers, Beware! If you have a vagina and plan on penetrative sex, you should be aware of the risks of these swimming strokes. A simple and uncomfortable scenario would be that your vagina gets filled with water and may make underwater sex unfavorable. Other scenarios include the chemicals from a pool drying you out or the bacteria in bodies of water causing yeast and other infections. Although these can easily be treated, it can ultimately ruin your summer fun and no one wants that.
4. Getting caught – yay or nay? You really will have to consider where this is occurring. Just because you might enjoy people watching, does not mean those people consented to your synchronized swimming routine. Not to mention the potential legal risks you are making by doing this in a public space. Give your private pool, tub or shower a consideration if orange jumpsuits aren’t your thing.
5. Speaking of the shower… positioning can be difficult in any body of water. Although showers and tubs may be the safest space to engage in your underwater antics, does not mean there isn’t potential to find penetrative play difficult or lose your footing and get hurt. Make sure you have a non-slip mat and be mindful of water on the floor afterwards.
6. Splash-proof vs. Waterproof vs. Submergible: If toys are a huge part of your water play, you will need to make sure they can handle large bodies of water before you create casualties in your deep dive adventures. Splash-proof toys means they absolutely should not be brought in the shower or more – they are only protected enough to gently wash them with water. Waterproof toys are good in showers, but be careful with tubs and leaving them in the water. Only IPX7 submergible toys can be brought into bodies of water and even then, it can only be brought in about 1 meter (3 feet) for about 30 minutes.

If you are still interested in have underwater fun, make sure you and your partner are clear on what you want to do (and don’t want to do). Use this a more of a foreplay and move onto the mainland for the grand finale. And DON’T FORGET THE LUBE!
